About Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaon or Khwopa, is the best-preserved medieval city in the Kathmandu Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous for its open-museum atmosphere, intricate woodcarvings, towering pagodas, and traditional red-brick architecture.
Located 12 km east of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur served as the capital of the Malla Kingdom until the 15th century. Unlike its neighbors, the city has maintained its historical soul by remaining largely vehicle-free in its core heritage zones. It is a city of four major squares—Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatraya Square, and Pottery Square—each showcasing a different facet of Newari life. Highlights include the 55-Window Palace, the Nyatapola Temple (Nepal’s tallest), and the world-famous Golden Gate. Beyond stone and wood, Bhaktapur is celebrated for its Juju Dhau (King Curd), thriving pottery industry, and vibrant festivals like Bisket Jatra, offering a living glimpse into a civilization that has thrived for over a millennium.
