About Bouddhanath Stupa
Bouddhanath Stupa is one of the world's largest and most sacred Tibetan Buddhist sites, located on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu. Recognizable by its massive white dome and the watchful all-seeing eyes of Buddha, it serves as the spiritual heart of Nepal’s Tibetan community and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Standing approximately 36 metres tall, Bouddhanath was built on an ancient trade route connecting Tibet and India. Its architecture is a massive 3D mandala, representing the Buddhist cosmos: the base symbolizes Earth, the dome is Water, the square tower is Fire, the spire is Air, and the pinnacle is Ether. Legend attributes its origin to a poor widow named Jadzima who petitioned a king for land the size of a buffalo hide, cleverly cutting it into thin strips to claim a vast area. Following the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the area became a major refugee settlement, leading to the construction of over 50 monasteries (gompas) in its vicinity. Today, it is a bustling hub where the rhythmic sounds of chanting, spinning prayer wheels, and fluttering flags create a deeply meditative atmosphere.
