About Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is Nepal's first national park and a premier UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the subtropical inner Terai lowlands, it is world-famous for its successful conservation of the one-horned rhinoceros and the Royal Bengal tiger.

Established in 1973, Chitwan encompasses 952.63 sq. km of dense Sal forests, tall elephant grasslands, and vibrant riverine ecosystems. It is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 68 species of mammals, 600+ species of birds, and the rare gharial crocodile. Beyond its wild inhabitants, the park is deeply intertwined with the indigenous Tharu culture, whose traditional villages and vibrant dances offer a unique cultural dimension to the jungle experience. Visitors can explore the park via jeep safaris, tranquil canoe rides on the Rapti River, or guided jungle walks. Its low-altitude tropical climate makes it an ideal year-round destination, especially as a relaxing contrast to high-altitude Himalayan trekking.
