About Lumbini – Birthplace of Lord Buddha
Lumbini is a sacred UNESCO World Heritage Site in the plains of southern Nepal, world-renowned as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Lord Buddha. It is one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, attracting millions seeking peace and spiritual awakening.
Located in the Rupandehi district, Lumbini is a vast monastic zone where history and spirituality converge. The heart of the site is the Mayadevi Temple, which protects the Marker Stone pinpointing the exact spot of Buddha's birth in 623 BC. Beside it lies the Pushkarini Pond, where Queen Mayadevi bathed before giving birth, and the Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC to commemorate his pilgrimage. The Master Plan, designed by architect Kenzo Tange, features a central canal flanked by dozens of unique international monasteries built by different Buddhist nations, showcasing diverse global architectures. From the serene Eternal Peace Flame to the majestic World Peace Pagoda, Lumbini stands as a global symbol of non-violence and tranquility.
