About Mustang
Mustang is a high-altitude district in northern Nepal characterized by its trans-Himalayan desert landscape, dramatic ochre cliffs, and deep gorges. It is famously divided into Lower Mustang, a lush gateway for pilgrims and trekkers, and Upper Mustang, the "Last Forbidden Kingdom" where ancient Tibetan culture remains uniquely preserved.
Stretching to the Tibetan border, Mustang is a geographical marvel sitting in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, making it one of the few places in Nepal suitable for monsoon trekking. The region is a living museum of Tibetan Buddhism, home to 15th-century monasteries, the medieval walled city of Lo Manthang, and thousands of mysterious sky caves carved into sheer rock faces. Visitors experience a stark transition from the apple orchards and sacred spouts of Muktinath in the south to the wind-eroded, lunar-like plateaus of the north. While roads have increased accessibility, Mustang’s core identity remains rooted in its centuries-old traditions, vibrant festivals like Tiji, and the enduring hospitality of the Thakali and Loba people.
