About Rukum
Rukum is a remote, mystical district in western Nepal, famously nicknamed the "Land of 52 Lakes and 53 Hills." Now split into Eastern Rukum (Lumbini Province) and Western Rukum (Karnali Province), it offers a blend of pristine alpine nature, rich Magar heritage, and significant modern political history.
Tucked within the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range, Rukum serves as a premier destination for off-the-beaten-path travelers seeking raw natural beauty and authentic cultural immersion. The region is home to the stunning Rukmini Tal (lotus lake) and the massive Syarpu Lake, surrounded by lush green hills and traditional white-washed Magar villages. Historically known as the "heartland" of the Maoist revolution, Rukum now invites tourists to explore the unique Guerrilla Trek, which retraces rebel trails through rugged landscapes and dense rhododendron forests. Its geography transitions from subtropical valleys at 800m to the perpetual snow of Mt. Sisne and Putha Hiunchuli at over 7,200m, offering a complete Himalayan experience far from commercial crowds.
