About Sikkim Monasteries

Sikkim is home to over 200 monasteries, or Gompas, which serve as the spiritual and cultural backbone of the state. These sacred sites are known for their Tibetan Buddhist architecture, intricate murals, and serene hilltop locations offering panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range.

Scattered across the mist-covered ridges of the Eastern Himalayas, Sikkim’s monasteries are living centers of the Nyingma and Kagyu orders of Tibetan Buddhism. From the 1701-founded Dubdi Monastery, the state's oldest, to the grand Rumtek Monastery, the largest and seat of the Karmapa in exile, these institutions preserve ancient manuscripts, golden stupas, and vibrant thangkas. Beyond their architectural splendor, they are active hubs of ritual, where the rhythmic sound of chanting monks, fluttering prayer flags, and flickering butter lamps create a profound atmosphere of peace. Many host annual Cham (masked) dances, which bring legends to life through vivid costumes and sacred performances.
