About Tiger’s Nest Monastery
Tiger’s Nest, or Paro Taktsang, is Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, perched dramatically on a sheer cliff 900 metres above the Paro Valley. This sacred Vajrayana Buddhist site is a masterpiece of architecture and faith, seemingly suspended in the air against a backdrop of rugged Himalayan peaks.
Built in 1692, the monastery complex is anchored around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave, where the 8th-century saint Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have meditated for over three years. Legend holds that he flew to this precipice on the back of a flying tigress to subdue local demons, giving the site its evocative name. The current structure, meticulously restored after a 1998 fire, consists of four main temples and several residential dwellings interconnected by stone stairways and wooden bridges. Visitors navigate a moderately strenuous 6.4 km round-trip hike through pine and rhododendron forests, often guided by fluttering prayer flags and the scent of incense. Inside, the dimly lit temples glow with butter lamps, ancient thangka paintings, and gilded statues, though photography is strictly prohibited to preserve the site's deep spiritual sanctity.
