Nepal has two classic trekking seasons — autumn and spring — but the “best” time depends on the trail, the altitude and how much you mind company. Here is what each season is really like on the ground.
Seasons at a glance
| Season | Months | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn | Sep – Nov | Clear skies after the monsoon, stable weather, busiest trails. | Almost every trek, including high passes |
| Winter | Dec – Feb | Cold nights, crisp views, quiet trails; high passes may be snowbound. | Lower and mid-altitude treks |
| Spring | Mar – May | Warmer, rhododendrons in bloom, more haze later in the season. | Most treks; flowers on mid-hills |
| Monsoon | Jun – Aug | Daily rain, leeches, landslides and cloudy views on most routes. | Rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang |
Autumn (September – November): the classic season
The monsoon washes the air clean, so October and November bring the most reliable mountain views of the year. Trails and teahouses are at their busiest, and major festivals — Dashain and Tihar — fall in this window, so domestic transport fills up. Book flights and popular lodges early.
Early September can still be wet at lower elevations; late November gets noticeably colder at altitude.
Winter (December – February): quiet and clear
Skies are often very clear and trails are far quieter. The trade-off is cold — nights well below freezing at higher teahouses — and high passes can close after snowfall. Winter is a great time for lower treks around Pokhara and Kathmandu, and for the lower sections of the big routes.
Spring (March – May): warmth and rhododendrons
Days get warmer and the mid-hill forests turn red and pink with rhododendron blooms, especially on routes like Ghorepani Poon Hill. Views are usually good early in the season, with more afternoon cloud and haze by May as the monsoon approaches.
Monsoon (June – August): pick a rain-shadow trek
Most of Nepal gets heavy rain, slippery trails, leeches and a higher risk of landslides and flight delays. But areas behind the Himalaya, such as Upper Mustang and Dolpo, sit in a rain shadow and are at their best. If you trek elsewhere in monsoon, build in spare days.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to trek in Nepal?
October is the most popular month thanks to clear, stable post-monsoon weather. November and April are also excellent.
Can you trek in Nepal in winter?
Yes. Lower and mid-altitude treks are great in winter, with clear skies and fewer people. High passes may close after snowfall and nights at altitude are very cold.
Can you trek in Nepal during the monsoon?
Yes, but expect rain, leeches and possible landslides on most routes. Rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang are a good monsoon choice.
When do rhododendrons bloom in Nepal?
Mainly in spring, roughly March to April on mid-hill routes such as Ghorepani Poon Hill, varying with altitude.
